A Spoonful of Sofrito: Mini-Review: Tung Thong Thai

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Mini-Review: Tung Thong Thai

Sofrito Lovers,

Do I have a scoop for you!  If you like, love, or are interested in Thai food, then make your way to Tung Thong Thai in Washington Heights!

Tung Thong Thai is a small mom'n'pop establishment with delicious Thai fare at reasonable prices. The orange brick walls, wooden tables, and narrow space aren't the most aesthetically pleasing, but who cares?  The food is why you should make this trip to the Heights.  Check out their menu here!

The Yellow Curry-prepared with carrots, potatoes, and onions-is creamy, a bit spicy, and loaded with that subtitle, yet incredible, coconut flavor.  The dish is served with  with your choice of chicken, beef, or shrimp!  I suggest the chicken, it was incredible!

The Pineapple Fried Rice, also served with your choice of chicken, beef, or shrimp,  is packed with yummy curry goodness-once again, simplicity can be delicious!  Who knew this neat little mound of rice could be so satisfying and incredible?

Last, but certainly not least, is the seminal dish of all Thai restaurants: Pad Thai!  Tung Thong Thai's Pad Thai is a delectable combination of veggies, bean sprouts, stir fired noodles, and whichever protein you choose.  Quick tip:  If a Thai place has delicious Pad Thai, then you know the rest of the menu will be good!

Not to be too repetitive, but you have to try the food at Tung Thong Thai, it's one of Washington Heights' best kept secrets! I'm sure you'll love it, but don't take my word for it, go and taste for yourself!  ¡Buen provecho!

Goya Carne Asada Tacos!

Sofrito Lovers,

Saturday is Cinco de Mayo and nothing says Cinco de Mayo celebration then...Tacos!  I'm sure you thought I was going to say Tequila, but NO!  It's about yummy food, not that nasty beverage.  Yes, you read correctly: NASTY!

I know I've just started a war, but I don't care!  tacos are what make this holiday worthwhile!  Check out the recipe posted below from Goya and make a tray of delicious Carne Asada Tacos for your celebration!  And if you must, serve them with some Tequila....eeewww!

Watch, then go taste for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!

Carne Asada Tacos

Ingredients

1½lbs. flank or skirt steak, trimmed of excess fat
1bottle (24.5 oz.) GOYA® Mojo Criollo
½ white onion, very finely chopped
¼cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
2 limes, one juiced (about 2 tbsp.), the other cut into wedges
½tsp. salt
1tbsp. GOYA® Corn Oil
12 GOYA® Corn Tortillas

Directions

Step1
Cut steak into ½" pieces; transfer to a large non-metallic bowl or deep dish. Pour Mojo over steak, making sure all pieces are completely submerged; cover and transfer to refrigerator. Marinate at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours. Bring steak to room temperature 30 minutes before cooking; drain and discard marinade.

Step2
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together white onion, cilantro, lime juice and salt until combined; cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

Step3
Using a paper towel, pat steak dry. Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak, making sure not to crowd pan; cook in batches, flipping occasionally, until dark golden brown and cooked through, about 5 minutes per batch; transfer to serving platter; tent with foil to keep warm.

Step4
Heat large griddle, cast-iron skillet, or another heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add enough tortillas to cover the surface of griddle; leaving some space between each tortilla. Cook, flipping once, until very lightly charred, warmed through and pliable, about 30 seconds per batch; transfer tortillas to tortilla holder, a foil packet, or clean dish towel to keep warm.

Step5
To assemble tacos, fill the tortilla with meat; garnish with reserved onion-cilantro mixture. Drizzle with taco sauce, if desired. Serve with lime wedges.

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Can These 8 Americans Handle Caribbean Food?

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Can These 8 Americans Handle Caribbean Food?

Sofrito Lovers,

Food makes us laugh, especially when you watch people try a cuisine for the first time.  I love watching the trepidation, fear, and then relief as people taste something new.  I enjoy their bravery and willingness to try a dish that's totally out of their repertoire of food.  It's funny and inspiring!  Every time I watch a tasting video it makes me want to explore a new food culture!

Check out the BuzzFeed video below, as a bunch of Americans try various Caribbean dishes.  I hope it inspires you to get out there and try some delicious Caribbean fare!

Watch, learn, and laugh, then go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: The Bronx Is Where You’ll Find NYC’s Best Pizza!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

The Bronx Is Where You’ll Find NYC’s Best Pizza!

 Sofrito Lovers,

Only the best comes out of the Boogie Down Bronx!  We've got the Yankees, Pelham Bay Park, and the dopest Little Italy of all.  We're the cradle of Hip Hop, Salsa, and Boogaloo!  We also have the best Pizza in NYC!  Yes, you read that right: The Best Pizza in NYC!

I know that last statement is as controversial as Trump and the Russian involvement in the election, but it's nonetheless true!  Check out the article below, from Chowhound.com, and go get yourself a little slice of heaven from one of the amazing places he writes about.  I love the pizza at Mangia's and Crosby's, it's spectacular!

After a few slices at these places, you'll unequivocally agree that the best pizza in NYC is in the Bronx-take that Brooklyn!

Go taste for yourself! ¡Buen provecho!

New York City is huge. The five boroughs of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and The Bronx could easily be tentpole cities of their own if you were to place them in the middle of another state. Here in New York, they form a massive 302.6 square mile behemoth of a city. To navigate this beast, the MTA has buses and subways that go pretty much everywhere if you try hard enough (even Staten Island, with its ferry service). In my 34 years living in New York City, I know for a fact there are places that I have yet to see or experience properly. Up until a little more than a year ago, outside of trips to Yankee Stadium, The Bronx was one of my blind spots. Then I started dating a girl who lives there. To be specific, she resides in the Pelham Bay area, which is really only accessible via one subway line: the 6 train. From where I live, about a half hour’s walk from Coney Island, one of the southernmost areas of Brooklyn, my trip can take at least an hour and 45 minutes via public transportation. To say the least, I’ve gotten through some good books, comics, podcasts, and long Candy Crush sessions over these last few months. But you know what made these long trips so worth it, outside of the promise of seeing my girlfriend, who if she’s reading this, I absolutely appreciate so very much? The pizza.
