A Spoonful of Sofrito: Chicken Fried Steak Recipe

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Chicken Fried Steak Recipe

Sofrito Lovers,

This weekend, I made one of my favorite Southern recipes: Chicken Fried Steak! I love this dish and the recipe is pretty easy to follow.  I don't remember exactly where I got the recipe from, but it's been in my personal cookbook file for a while.  I've posted it below for folks to use and improve upon.

Check it out for yourself!  Read it, cook it, and taste for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!

Chicken Fried Steak

Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon each salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1-1/4 cups buttermilk, divided
4 beef cubed steaks (4 ounces each)
Oil for frying
1-1/2 cups 2% milk

Directions:
In a shallow bowl, combine 1-3/4 cups flour, baking powder and
seasonings. In another shallow bowl, combine egg and 3/4 cup buttermilk.

Dip each cubed steak in buttermilk mixture, then roll in flour mixture. Let stand for 5 minutes.

In a large skillet, heat 1/2 in. of oil on medium-high.

Fry steaks for 5-7 minutes. Turn carefully; cook 5 minutes longer or until coating is crisp and meat is no longer pink. Remove steaks and keep warm.

Drain, reserving 1/3 cup drippings; stir remaining flour into drippings until smooth.

Cook and stir over medium heat for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk and remaining buttermilk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve with steaks.

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Coquito Masters Competition!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Coquito Masters Competition!

Sofrito Lovers,

The time has come for the Coquito grand masters in NYC to come together and compete for the title of, "NYS Coquito Master."   This competition is life or death...well, not so much, but the drama is still high pace and intense!

For those of you totally confused, Coquito is a delicious Puerto Rican/Caribbean holiday (mostly Christmas) concoction of rum, coconut, several types of milk, eggs, cinnamon, and other spices.  Think of eggnog, but full of coconut and WAY BETTER TASTING!

Since 2001,Coquito grand masters have competed for the title of "NYS Coquito Master!" Coquito is delicious and this competition is really fun!  Check out the flyer for the regional competitions below.  I highly recommend you attend and give it a taste; freshly made coquito can truly be incredible!

Go taste for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Tequila is HEALTHY!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Tequila is healthy!

Sofrito Lovers,

The video below and the subsequent research done on this matter has blown my mind! Apparently, when our Mexican brothers and sisters boast about the healing properties of Tequila, they're not joking!

Tequila might well be a super food...or drink in this case.  This adorable fire water's health benefits are amazing and might very well catapult this drink into the same medicinal alcohol category as wine!

Check out the video below and get your mind blown!  I'm thinking it's time I got some straight Tequila shots into my diet!  Wow! Getting healthy sure has gotten fun!

Watch it and go get yourself a shot! ¡Buen Provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Pork Roll/Jersey Breakfast

Sofrito Lovers,

Have you ever tasted pork roll?  Do you know what a Jersey Breakfast is? Until this weekend, I couldn't answer any of these questions myself, but after watching the cooking tutorial below, from Emmymadeinjapan, I am now a Jersey Breakfast expert!

Okay, so that's a bit of an exaggeration! But, you must understand that I love pork and the realization that Jersey Pork Roll is this amazing breakfast meat I've never tasted has me obsessed with learning about it and trying it.  I've researched various Jersey Breakfast cooking tutorials and articles on the history of this breakfast phenomenon. For the life of me, I can't stop thinking about tasting this dish!

I'm planning on doing my own cooking and tasting tutorial very soon.  I'm going to be making a trip to Joisey any day now to buy some pork roll!  I'll post it on here in the next few weeks! Check out the video below!  Watch, then go taste for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!
