A visit to a decent winery generally requires a trek outside of New York’s five boroughs, but the city is one of the country’s great beer towns and has only proven itself more so in recent years. A flood of young, postage stamp-sized breweries has joined stalwarts like Brooklyn Brewery to deliver an exciting, diverse selection of brews in their taprooms and at various bars. Here are the standout breweries with bar spaces to check out for a pint or several.

I was loitering outside Deluxe—the hybrid Chinese market/butcher and food court that stretches from Elizabeth to Mott in lower Manhattan—waiting for a friend and clapping the flaky dust of a chicken curry puff from my hands.
