Sofrito Lovers,

Sietsema's picks are always incredible!  I'm planning to visit a few of these places this weekend!  I'll let you know what I think; I hope to see you there!  Read, get out there, and go taste for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!

Spicy Lanka — Located along Hillside Avenue’s restaurant row in downtown Jamaica, this rare Sri Lankan treats the cuisine from a halal perspective. The prices are very reasonable, too, considering that the humongous entrees easily feed two. One dish not to be missed is kothu roti, a pyramid fashioned from torn-up shreds of flatbread tossed with slivered vegetables and a main ingredient that runs to egg, chicken, mutton, shrimp, or kingfish. The dish originated in the north of the teardrop-shaped island, once the colony of Ceylon, and the ripped roti will remind you of noodles. Featuring actual noodles, string hoppers are another prize main course: coiled vermicelli that can be matched with any number of curries and chutneys.

Hosted by the sexy and hilarious Mike Chen, this video is an homage to both food challenges and to Pho, that incredible Vietnamese beef soup that has become an international soup sensation!  if you've never heard of Pho, then you must watch the video below.

I won't give any more away!  Watch, laugh and then go get some Pho!  Go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen Provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: NYC Universal Pasteles Contest!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

NYC Universal Pasteles Contest!

Sofrito Lovers,

Join us on Saturday, November 19th at Sapito's for the 3rd Annual Universal Pasteles Contest!  For the folks not in the know, Pasteles are a Puerto Rican/Caribbean delicacy made of green banana, plantain or yucca (cassava) dough that has been filled with a stewed meat and vegetables and boiled in a platano leaf.  It's like a Mexican Tamal except it isn't made with cornmeal.  They're savory, hearty, and delicious!

Going on its third year, this competition is fun, intense, and entertaining!  There's going to be a panel for traditional and nontraditional pasteles, which means you can sample an extraordinary variety of this delicious dish!

Folks, I hope you join me this Saturday and truly indulge in an amazing culinary cook off!  This is going to be incredible!

COME TASTE FOR YOURSELF! ¡Buen provecho!
