A Spoonful of Sofrito: People trying Vintage Candy

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

People trying Vintage Candy!

Sofrito Lovers,

My last visit to a candy shop brought back wonderful memories of my childhood working in my father's bodega, where I used to sample all of the old time candy my Papi used to sell.

My father had a pretty diverse, and kick-ass, array of candy treats. He sold Boston baked beans, Lemon heads, Milk Duds, Bazooka Joes, Garbage Pail Kids, Red Hots, and Gushers.  Papi had an awesome eye for candy!

Watching the video posted below, from BuzzFeedVideos on YouTube, reminded me of my childhood taste tasting all of my Papi's merchandise!  Watch, run to your closest candy shop and enjoy!

Go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen Provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Kellogg Cereal Restaurant

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Kellogg Cereal Restaurant

Sofrito Lovers,

Have you ever wanted to order Apple Jacks or CoCo Puffs at your local diner, but all they had were Corn Flakes or Frosted Flakes? Have you ever wished you could order cereal for lunch or dinner?  Are you a fan of Captain Crunch or Rice Crispies and wished you could eat them out on the town? Well, on July 4th Kellogg's will be opening up a restaurant that is right up your alley!

According to the Eater.com article posted below, Kellogg's is opening a cereal based restaurant in Times Square where you can order any of their cereals with all sorts of toppings, coffee, tea, and make your own cereal sundaes.

To be honest, I'm really intrigued with the notion of a cereal restaurant.  I'm not big into breakfast cereals, but the idea seems really cool!  There's certainly a market for it!  I think I'll be talking my partner David, once they open!  He's a cereal fanatic and will probably order a bowl of everything!  I'll let you know how he likes it!

Read it and go taste it for yourself! ¡Buen Provecho!

Anthony Rudolf Team Up With Kellogg’s For Permanent Times Square Cereal Restaurant

Milk Bar's chef and Per Se's former GM put together a restaurant with America's cereal titan

The weirdest and most unexpected opening of summer 2016 might very well be Kellogg’s NYC. It’s an all-day Times Square cereal bar with dishes created by consulting chef Christina Tosi, and a wall of automat-style cabinets where the food is dispensed and picked up. It's kind of like an Amazon Locker for breakfast. Keeping with the cereal box theme, these little windows will be full of not just bowls of milk and grain products, but also surprise items like toys or even Hamilton tickets.

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Mexican Cowboy Beans

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life

Mexican Cowboy Beans

Sofrito Lovers,

Just the other day, a friend of mine was talking about how delicious Frijoles Charros are and asked me if I  had eve tried them; I answered no.  Before our conversation, I had never heard of the dish and now these three words have been popping up all over the place. I've read about them in Food & Wine and Serious Eats!  Apparently, this bean dish is  becoming one of the newest food trends.

According to Serious Eats, this delicious soup-ish/stew-ish bean dish will make you the most popular person at your next potluck!  Made with garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and a few other tasty ingredients, this dish is changing the way we think of Mexican food.  The more we explore traditional dishes, the closer we get to enjoying the full diversity of a cuisine.  I'm all for it; bring out the beans!

Check out the article below and get cooking!

Read it, cook it, taste for yourself, and ¡Buen Provecho!

Win Your Next Potluck With Frijoles Charros (Mexican Cowboy Beans)

Do side dishes at potlucks and cookouts ever give you trouble? They're trouble for me. The big problem is that with large, informal gatherings, it's hard to gauge how long a dish will have to be held before it's served, or to predict exactly how it's going to be transported. The results are something we're all familiar with: mushy, congealed mac and cheese, crusted-over dips, soggy fried chicken, and the like. The ideal potluck or cookout dish is one that is easy to make in bulk and inexpensive, and doesn't degrade with extended heating or reheating.

I nominate frijoles charros—Mexican cowboy beans cooked with onions, garlic, tomatoes, salted pork, and chilies—as one superlative potluck dish. It not only hits all of those criteria but also adds on "extremely delicious" for good measure.
