A Spoonful of Sofrito: Dominican Sweet Cream of beans dessert!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Dominican Sweet Cream of beans dessert!

Sofrito Lovers,

Have you ever tasted Dominican Habichuelas con Dulce or Dominican Sweet Cream of Beans?  If your answer is no, then drop everything you're doing and focus, because this dessert will change your life.

Being blessed with Dominican friends, family, and living in a Dominican community, I've had the honor/blessing/privilege of enjoying this amazing dessert a lot.  Habichuelas con Dulce is made by combining beans, Caribbean sweet potato, milk, cinnamon, and a few other spices and ingredients together in a pot and cooked for an hour or so.

Some of you might be thinking that a bean based dessert sounds weird, but many cultures use beans for their desserts.  Go to Chinatown and you won't be able to count the different desserts made with red or black bean paste, which I highly recommend!

Over the holidays, a co-worker made some Habichuelas con Dulce and it was so good I decided to look up its recipe!  Posted on QueRicaVida.com, this recipe is easy to follow and makes a nice serving size.  Check it out and please, please, please, go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen Provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Chinese Girl Tries American Chinese Food!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Chinese Girl Tries American Chinese Food!

Sofrito Lovers,

I remember the first time I visited a Puerto Rican restaurant in Cuba, I was ecstatic to try the food! For two weeks, all I had eaten was Cuban style Congrí (Black beans and rice stewed together), Boñato (Caribbean white sweet potato) and baked chicken almost everyday.  I was dying for a change and if a taste of my own culture was the alternative, then I was all for it.

I assumed the food would be wonderful because Cuban and Puerto Rican cuisine are similar, but I was very wrong.  The Cuban interpretation of Boricua cuisine was horrible!  It all tasted like Cuban food; it was full of cumin, had no sofrito, and no cilantro.  I was both shocked and deeply disappointed.

When I saw the post below, from Laowhy86, on my YouTube feed, I had to watch and then share it.  I know exactly what the young lady went through!  It can be disheartening to experience your cultural cuisine be misinterpreted, but on the bright side, it makes you appreciate it more.

Watch the video below, laugh, and then call your mom and ask her to make you some good home cooking!  Go taste for yourself!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: 7 Must-Visit Outer Borough Breweries!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

7 Must-Visit Outer Borough Breweries!

Sofrito Lovers,

Beer is one of the most amazing concoctions ever made!  I know this sounds crazy coming from me because I don't drink, but when I do decide to imbibe, it's always beer!

I'm no beer expert, but I know what I like and its artisanal craft beers, especially from microbreweries in the Bronx and Brooklyn.  When I first saw the post below, from Serious Eats, I got excited and started making plans to visit some of these incredible breweries.

Check out the post below and maybe we'll run into each other at The Gun Hill Brewery or Threes Brewery in Brooklyn!  I can't wait to taste some of those citrus based and wild flower infused beers! Read this article and then go taste for yourself!  Remember, drink responsibly! ¡Buen Provecho!

New York Beer: 7 Must-Visit Outer Borough Breweries  ANNE BECERRA

New York City's current craft beer boom feels quite exciting and new...except, in fact, there's nothing new about it. Before the Croton Aqueduct began providing potable drinking water to the city in the early 1840s, beer was considered the one of the few safe ways to hydrate, and for most of the 19th century, New York City was one of the country's largest brewing centers.

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Meat Lovers Get Pranked With Plant Burgers!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Meat Lovers Get Pranked With Plant Burgers!

Sofrito Lovers,

A true carnivore knows whether they're being fed delicious well seasoned cooked meat or some crazy Frankenstein plant based fake meat substitute. When I saw the BuzzFeedVideo posted below, I swore up and down that I could never be fooled, until I was.

Coincidence is funny!  After watching this video the other day, I was given an opportunity to taste a new delicious burger, that I loved, and found out it was also completely plant based.  Damn those sneaky vegetarian/vegan food scientists!  It was meaty, savory, hearty and delicious!  I couldn't believe it was some weird plant protein and wheat flour thing.  I hate to admit it but they got me good!

Check out the video below and see how these other carnivores faired in their taste tests.  Laugh and have fun!  Go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen Provecho!
