A Spoonful of Sofrito: People Try Desserts From Around The World!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

People Try Desserts From Around The World!

Sofrito Lovers,

As you all know, I am a huge fan of BuzzFeedVideo and their tasting videos! Last month, BuzzFeed posted this awesome video titled, "People try desserts from Around the World!", which has changed my life.

Being Diabetic, I have to be careful with my sugar consumption, so dessert isn't often part of my meal, but this BuzzFeed video has inspired me to start trying international desserts-responsibly, of course!

Now I know that sounds bad, but when I did some research on the desserts  featured in the video posted below, I found out that a lot of them aren't as processed as American desserts tend to be. In fact, many of these international desserts are made with honey, organic fruits, nuts, seeds, eggs, and fruit-based products, which are healthier than our usual super processed sugars and creams.

This has inspired me to get out there and try some new desserts! I'm looking for international/ethnic based bakeries throughout the City that use healthier products instead of refined sugar! I'll let you know what I find and taste!

Watch the video, and go taste for yourself! ¡Buen provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: Cooking with Drag Queens!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

Cooking with Drag Queens!

Sofrito Lovers,

Do you know what makes cooking even more fun?  Cooking with a Drag Queen, duh! Cooking with Drag Queens, my NEW FAVORITE WEBSERIES on YouTube, is a hilarious cooking segment where hosts, Marc Felion and Fausto Fernos (WEPA, Boricua!), cook with some of the most amazing Drag Queens on the scene!

Three weeks ago, I discovered this unique and hysterical series completely by accident.  I was looking up some Drag Queen related YouTube video and stumbled upon an episode; I was instantly hooked!  The videos feature an interview with an amazing Drag Queen, some clips of their shows, and the cooking segment, which is funny beyond belief.  The recipes are easy to follow and the dishes look AH-mazing!

No strangers to drag or culinary culture, Marc and Fausto have created an amazing series that is as educational as it is entertaining.  Despite the jokes and craziness, the hosts talk about nutrition, cooking styles, and other cooking related topics.

Posted below is the episode where they made African Peanut Curry; I can't wait to prepare this dish! Honestly, I wish I could prepare it alongside RuPual's Drag Race Season 8 winner Bob The Drag Queen like Marc and Fausto did; that'd be so cool!

Check out Cooking with Drag Queens and experience the culinary extravaganaz eleganza, hunties!  YAAASSS GAAWWD! Watch it and ¡Buen Provecho, LOCAS!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: 10 Easy Ways to Reduce Food Waste (and Save a Ton of Money)

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.
10 Easy Ways to Reduce Food Waste (and Save a Ton of Money)

Sofrito Lovers,

I love saving money, especially when buying groceries!  I'm constantly trying to lower the cost of my groceries without sacrificing quality and not wasting food.  The article posted below from, Woman's Day, has an excellent list of suggestions on how you can save money and reduce food waste.

I'm going to put several of these suggestions into action immediately, such as: Preparing meals in advance, subscribing to a delivery service, eating more leftovers, and storing fresh foods properly.  I'm excited to keep track of the money I save and putting that cash to good use, like eating our more!

Check out this great article and ¡Buen Provecho!

10 Easy Ways to Reduce Food Waste (and Save a Ton of Money)

Put money back in your pocket with these easy adjustments.
By Diane MacEachern
May 16, 2016

If you were on your way to spend $100 at the grocery store, would you stop and just throw $20 or $30 out on the street? Of course not! Yet, because most people waste about 30 percent of the food they buy, that's effectively what's happening. In fact, a four-person family loses $1,500 a year on wasted food, says the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The good news is, food waste isn't inevitable. In fact, you can cut the amount of food (and money) you squander almost to zero by making a few simple changes in how you buy, store and eat food. We've pulled together some of the easiest adjustments to make:
1. Buy Less: Sure, it's obvious, but even if an overstocked fridge and a bulging pantry makes you feel prepared for anything, it's actually costing you a lot of money. Of course, it's great to take advantage of 2-for-1 sales and items like that jumbo bag of bargain-priced spinach. But if you can't eat it all before it goes bad, why buy it in the first place? When it comes to perishable food, buy what you reasonably expect to eat for the next four or five days, not the next month. Bonus: Buying too much food can cause a lot of stress when it comes to figuring out how to store it all once you get home. When you buy less, you'll cut clutter and find more peace of mind!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: The ugly truth about McDonald's breakfast!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

McDonald's Employees Share the ugly truth about McDonald's breakfast!

Sofrito Lovers,

Are you a Mickey Dee's aficionado?  Do you love those weird egg sandwiches, unnaturally fluffy pancakes, and hyper sweetened coffee drinks?  Are those almost identical hash browns and suspicious burritos your idea of an awesome breakfast? If you do, then you're in for a rude awakening!

Check out the article below from OOLA to get the lowdown on McDonald's breakfast.  This list is complied from the testimony of various employees, who divulged some of the most disgusting and dangerous facts about how MCDonald's prepares  your breakfast.  It's disturbing, horrific, and truly off putting.

Take a look at the list and rethink that next Egg McMuffin; those few seconds of consideration might keep you from food poisoning!  Read it and go eat somewhere else! ¡Buen provecho!

A Spoonful of Sofrito: West Coasters Try Cajun Meats

A Spoonful of Sofrito: A Pinch of advice that will add a lot of flavor to your life.

West Coasters Try Cajun Meats

Sofrito Lovers,

Deep fried gator!  Fried frog legs! Crawfish!  These are the delicacies of Cajun/Southern cooking!

So many people think that the only proteins you can enjoy are fish, beef, pork, or chicken.  Many people feel that once you stray away from the four options you're entering "disgusting" territory, well nothing could be further from the truth.

As a foodie who loves Cajun/Southern cooking, I can assure you nontraditional proteins like gator, frog, and crawfish are amazing.  With proper seasoning and preparations, these proteins can have incredible flavor profiles.  In some parts of the world, beef, pork, and chicken are shunned and considered disgusting. It's all a matter of perspective and open mindedness!

Check out the BuzzFeed video below for honest reactions on Cajun/Southern cuisine.  I hope it inspires you to get out there and try something new!

Watch, learn and go taste for yourself!  ¡Buen Provecho!
